Frequently Asked Questions
How good is a dog's hearing ability?
Answer: Dogs have a great sense of hearing. In fact, it is their second most developed sense (next to smell). Dogs can hear much sharper than humans. Not only can they detect sounds that are much too faint for humans, but they also can hear sounds pitched at frequencies above or below a human's range. Dogs can hear in the range of 67 HZ to 45 kHZ (compared to a high range of 20 kHZ in humans).
Why does my dog scratch himself silly?
Answer: The most common cause of constant itching is pollen allergy (such as mold, dust, etc.). Realize that allergies in pets, as in people, is genetic. Your pet may experience seasonal allergies. Your dog also may have parasites, like scabies or cheyletiella, or even a skin infection. If your dog is persistently scratching, visit your veterinarian. There are many treatments your veterinarian can administer to ease your pet.
What exactly are "hot spots" and what is the treatment/prevention?
Answer: A hot spot is the nickname given to a condition called pyotraumatic dermatitis. A hot spot consists of a bacterial infection (usually staphylococcus intermedius) that develops and rapidly spreads, emits pus and smells badly. Hair will usually fall out from the infected area skin. A hot spot will be warm to the touch, and painful to your dog. Because this condition is so painful and irritating the dog will usually bite and scratch the area further spreading the infection. I recommend using our Dr. Dog Skin Care treatment. We guarantee that it will clear up hot spots.

What do I do for my dog that eats his feces?
Answer: There are products that you can buy that you feed to your dog to make his feces undesirable for a dog to eat, or you can train your dog not to eat feces by placing a solution that your dog doesn't like on the feces so that again it is undesirable. This is a common problem especially with puppies. Often time puppies outgrow this problem.
What do you do if your dog eats clothing or fabric?
Answer: Monitor your dog and make sure he passes the clothing. If he doesn't then get him to a vet immediately because there could be an obstruction, which is very serious.
What should I give my dog who has diarrhea? What should I avoid giving him?
Answer: First, determine what is causing the diarrea. If he has a parasitic infection, he needs to see the vet. If it's simply due to a diet change, or is clearly not serious then your main concern is to make sure your dog stays well hydrated by giving him plenty of water. Also, adding a little garlic to his food or cutting back on his food may also help.
